Tuesday Night Split (2/11/09)

Tuesday Night Split

Unfortunately, one of the streaks came to an end last night in Beverly. The Women's Basketball Team had to face what it is like on the other side of the pillow as they got blown out, 85-65. The Ladies just got dominated in all aspects of the game last night, as the Gulls repeatedly beat the Nor'easters full court press on their way to countless easy buckets, and a 41-18 lead at the half. The Nor'easters were completely outsized down low, and couldn't get anything going in the paint being outrebounded by an enormous margin of 54-31. Despite outscoring the Gulls 47-44 in the second half, the Ladies were not able to overcome their terribly slow start, taking their first loss in TCCC play and ending their winning streak at 10 games. Freshman Margo Russell had 16 points and senior Sara Pelkey had 15, as they both came off the bench for the Nor'easters.
The Men's game was a different story. After getting out to a quick 11-0 start in the opening minutes, the Gulls crawled back and ended up tying the game at the half, 37-37, after hitting a mid range jumper to beat the buzzer. In the second half, UNE trailed by 1 with about eleven minutes left. As the Endicott crowd started to chant "ov-er-ra-ted" when the Gulls held their first lead, it seemed to set a fire under the Nor'easters, as they went on a rampid 20-0 run to blow the game open. That run quieted the Gulls "faithful," and sent the fifty Nor'easter Nasties that made the trip, into a tizzy. UNE had to keep their cool after guard Anthony Johnshon and Coach Jason Mulligan both picked up undeserved technicals, due to some questionable officiating as the teams combined for a total 46 personal fouls in the game.
The Nor'easters had a great team effort as 4 of the 5 starters scored in double figures. Johnson led the way with 19 points, and senior guard Steve Belmonte had 17. First-year Quentin Thompson was one rebound away from posting a double-double as he posted 14 points, and team highs 9 rebounds and 5 steals. Johnnie Jefferson chipped in with 14 points including a couple of threes to end Endicott runs, and Juice Simpson led the way for the Nor'easters dishing out 7 assists. The win extended their current streak to 18 straight games, and a perfect 10-0 in the conference.
Both the Men's and Women's Teams will play TCCC opponent Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday. The Men's game will be at 1 o'clock, and the Women's game will start at 3 o'clock.
